link to message within the serverThinking back, I know a lot of peoples upset was with the Guardian role in itself. I think the current ones we have are pretty solid within their role and have been doing a lovely job, though do we have a true outline of what that role actually does? If one of them decides to step away, what is the protocol for replacing them? Will there be training? What is the system in place currently, or what would a system look like, for selecting someone new? Is this role still solely up to you, UD? Or will this be a role that Owners and their Alphas can go to for education, concerns, and general knowledge about Chatlands itself? What about a voting system for Owners & Alphas (you included here UD!) when a new Guardian is needed?
What is this role that has had a lot of our members upset and wary of, going to be moving forward? And how do we prevent passed issues and concerns within this role?
I also want to mention that I think a lot of what has been shown to us (to-do lists and concepts of updates) are lovely and exciting, though I think it would also be good to talk over and acknowledge what all got us here to begin with. How can we truly make Chatlands safer without coming off like we are just giving it the "landlord special"
I hope that all didn't come off negatively. I know it is a conversation that has been had many times. When I had mentioned updates to Chatlands previously, I was mainly referring to all of us here. Our positions and how we function and work together

Re: Guardian role
I would personally like to see the Guardian role take on a more HR approach to Chatlands.
By this I mean I'd like to see them still not only remain being the only ones to decide and place Global bans but I'd love for them to be the main knowledge base for everything Chatlands related. It would be nice to have someone or a dedicated group to ask questions, and to be a source of training not only for new Site Owners but for existing Owners should a new rule or feature be implemented.
In modifying the role in this way, would help take a lot of the one-on-one stressors away from UD so that he may focus more on coding rather than the administrative side of Chatlands. The Guardians would be able to field and organize requests from Site Owners by urgency and importance so that everything may be in one place for him. Not only that, they may announce and promote things for him within the designated forums and/or servers. In addition, they would be able to help any new Site Owners adjust to being the head of a site and aid in teaching them how to navigate the panel and how to properly hire staffing to help them run their sites. Also to give tips on how to create a forum, Discord server set up, etc. It will also help greatly in investing in the future, as all of us here will benefit from being closer to one another and sharing our knowledge that we've gained over the years with new Owners and their Alphas.
As for new Guardians, I do think that there should be some additional public speaking courses made available. As with any move up in management positions, an emphasis on; de-escalation, organization, communication, and leadership. I still also think that this role should be voted on by all of us rather than being selected by one person and/or group.

Re: Guardian role
just doing some up keep & adding related conversation that furthers are thoughts on this particular topic!
With these great points being brought up, I like the idea of there being a section on this forum specifically for tutorials, important links, and extra training for New Owners. That way it is not solely on the Guardians, who do have a lot on their plates, for training and so that we all can help when there are any questions.

I completely understand the want and need for more guidance in this area and like I said above I do agree that something in place would be beneficial, but I don't think we should adjust how the current Guardians operate for a few reasons. one major factor is that many of them already carry a heavy load managing multiple chats at the alpha level, which is demanding on its own, even if some are quiet right now or still in development. that's in addition to the responsibilities they already have as Guardians. it's a lot to juggle, and I don't think it's fair to place new requirements or expectations on an already well-established role that's currently functioning as intended.
that said, I do think it could work to have a collective of alphas or owners who volunteer to help guide others, especially newer sites, through these processes. this kind of support could go a long way, but it should always remain voluntary, not mandatory.
I'm also not in agreement with making speaking courses or similar trainings a requirement. if these resources are available and free, I see no harm in offering them as optional tools for those who are interested in improving how they manage their chats. but they shouldn't be a condition for owning or running a chat.
I think chats should remain as they are, essentially a "free for all" because there are benefits to that, with the option to use available resources, not an enforced structure. it keeps things flexible while still providing help for those who do seek it.
to touch base on what you originally posted regarding the outlines for the Guardians, Wolfhome is currently working on a topic that will be posted soon that outlines their roles and how they're chosen along with their expectations. currently, there are 3 Guardians at any given time, chosen collaboratively by the existing Guardians and UD. however, in some cases, such as now, there may be a delay in selecting a replacement.

That is extremely reasonable! I myself have no problem helping when it's due, nor do I think it would be wise to dump more things on the Guardians as they have their hands full, which I agree whole heartedly.
As I've mentioned before I'm working on a document that I started a few weeks ago, I'm trying to take my time with it and not rush, as I want to be informative as possible. I think I have a lot of solid suggestions I'd like for everyone to give a good read, I also think it could help with some aspects Chatlands or this group have lacked? I've always thought dumping 100 responsibilities on Guardians is silly for example, instead, those who volunteer to do the work and can help, should be able to!
I have a few more things to add and then proofread over, but it should be done soonish, I'm very excited to share it with you all, as well as being able to discuss things with you all and be able to suggest together what can benefit and help Chatlands.

I don't agree with the idea of forcing Guardians into neutrality. that's already a given with their current role, as it is with every admin role. Guardians should be individuals with experience in at least being an alpha, or having other leadership experience in the community. I believe Guardians should be owners & alphas themselves because this ensures they have the necessary perspective and understanding to be effective in their role.
limiting Guardians to those who are neutral would unnecessarily narrow the pool to choose from, and that could vastly undermine the quality of the role. it's also not fair to strip the current Guardians of their positions simply because they own a chat or are an alpha on multiple chats. these individuals have already put in the time and effort to establish themselves, and their qualifications should be recognized and respected, especially for the work they've been doing as Guardians.

Re: Guardian role
Just to clarify this a little more, I do not think that this particular suggestion about public speaking courses should be required. I do think that they should be available should someone like to further their skills, that is what I had meant by this.Lorien wrote: ↑Tue Apr 01, 2025 12:52 amAs for new Guardians, I do think that there should be some additional public speaking courses made available.
